  1. Proper training for staff

Make sure your staff is trained to address and be pleasant with customers from the moment they walk in the door. There’s nothing worse than trying to spend money in a store and not being able to find a pleasant individual to help you.

  1. Make your entrance lovely

People buy with their hearts, not with their heads. So, make your entrance look good. Do you need some new mats? Logo mats? Colorful mats? We have all kinds.

If your retail space looks drab, then hire someone who specializes in interior design for retail space. It will be money well spent.

  1. Make sure your mats are clean and in good repair.

This not only reflects on your business philosophy, but it’s a safety issue. You may need more than one set of mats so that your entrance always looks perfect, especially this time of year with all the snow and rain. Mats that are wet and dirty need to be cleaned and dried before putting them back—so have an alternate set to put down when one set needs cleaning.

  1. It’s nice to have something special for a customer to “find”.

Have off to the side something unique or special-priced, a display that makes the customer feel like he or she has found a treasure.

  1. Treat your employees well.

Happy employees translate into happy customers. Unhappy employees will not help you grow your business. Give employees anti-fatigue mats, where possible. Tell employees when they’re doing something right.

  1. See if there are ways to save your customers’ time.

By this we mean do you have a website that allows for buying online and in-store pick-up? Do you have a smartphone app that helps with in-store navigation? Something as simple as a flyer available at the door with the current sales and promotions can make customers very happy.
