Watch Where You Step, Please: Stair Treads

Stair TreadsAccording to the National Safety Council, in the United States, there are one million accidents each year involving stairs. Falling in or near the stairs is second only to car accidents for leading causes of accidental injury.

So, when you’re making your business safer for everyone in every room, don’t forget the stairs. And do something now if you haven’t already because all accidents are more frequent in the winter with the arrival of rain, snow, and ice.

There are several things you can do to make your stairs safer, and we’re going to explore them with you.

  1. Stair treads: Stair treads increase traction, which is your first line of defense. They channel away dirt and water and make every step safer.

No matter what type of flooring you have, we have a stair tread that will work for it. We have stair treads in rubber, vinyl, and aluminum and several different types in each category. Depending on which you choose, they can be installed easily with adhesive or delivered to you with predrilled and countersunk holes for screws.

Heavy-duty rubber stair treads are pre-sanded for easy installation. And rubber is a sustainable material. They also come in 10 colors. Bonus.

Vinyl stair treads have an extra massive front edge to resist wear. They come in four colors, and we know that vinyl is extremely durable.

Extruded aluminum stair treads are especially useful if you have a worn-out stairway that you can’t afford to replace just yet. Aluminum treads will cover and make up for a multitude of sins.

The use of stair treads becomes even more critical if you are lacking in some of the other needed stairway safety features.

  1. Like good lighting. How can anyone walk safely up and down stairs if you can’t see? Well, at least you’ll have some traction on the stairs.
  1. Distraction. What happens when someone is walking around looking at his or her smartphone? It’s pretty easy to slip. Stair treads help. Of course, you can ask your employees not to walk and text, but it’s not so easy to ask your customers or clients to follow that rule.
  1. Signage. It may sound stupid, but even something as simple as a sign that says, “Careful, Stairs Ahead” can wake someone up from their reverie to pay attention.

But no matter what you do to increase your stair safety, stairs treads should be the first part of your action plan. They are inexpensive, easy to install, easy to clean, and they work. They will cut down on your stairway accidents. So, quick, order some before it snows again.

Falls are always 100 percent preventable, and we want you, your employees, customers, and clients to be safe during this winter season.
