The size of the entrance mats<\/a> that you select for your commercial space is important. The reasons why size is important may not be immediately obvious. So, let\u2019s talk about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stability.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Larger mats are more stable than smaller mats. You don\u2019t want your mats to move around, and you can\u2019t overlap them\u2014it\u2019s a safety hazard. So, when in doubt, go larger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Larger mats remove more dirt and water than smaller mats.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We\nknow that if a person takes two steps on a mat, about 50 percent of the water\nand dirt is removed from his or her shoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If a person has 12-15 running feet of mat, then over 90 percent of water and dirt is removed and stays on the mat. Your insurance agent may know something about these numbers because water on the mat is water that is not damaging your building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Larger mats keep your premises cleaner.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If\nmost of the dirt and water and debris stays on the entrance mat when people\nwalk in, that dirt and water is not<\/em>\nbeing tracked around your commercial space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When\nthe dirt and water stay on the mat, then it\u2019s easy to wash a mat. It\u2019s not so\neasy to wash hundreds of feet of floors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mats cut down on the time, energy, and cost of building maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Larger mats and longer runs of mats are safer.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Floors\nthat are wet and dirty contribute to slip, trip, and fall accidents, almost all\nof which are preventable. If your floors are cleaner, then your space is safer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Water\ntrapped in a mat is water that is not<\/em>\nmaking a floor slippery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now,\nthese are general guidelines. The selection of mats and mat sizes should also\nbe based on the dimensions of your doors, and how much and what kind of traffic\nyou have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One\ngeneral suggestion is for an entrance mat to be about 80 percent of the width\nor the doorway. But that doesn\u2019t say anything about how far into the building from\nthe door the mat should be. Generally, the bigger your doors, and the heavier\nyour foot traffic, then the wider and longer your mats should be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And\nremember, it\u2019s the business owner\u2019s responsibility to put down appropriate\nmatting which increases your overall floor safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
