Recessed\nmats and grates are terrific for one thing: very heavy foot traffic. This is\nwhy you frequently see them at airports or hotels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\nmany people don\u2019t realize is that they don\u2019t have to be installed with a\nrecessed area in the ground\u2014something that\u2019s a headache if you didn\u2019t think of\nit when the floor was originally installed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\ncan also be installed above ground. This is called a surface mount<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\nare three commonly known types of recessed mats with grates: Pedimat, Peditred,\nand Pedigrid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you know if\nyou need recessed mats and grates?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\ndepends on several variables including how much foot traffic you have and how\nmuch water is routinely being brought into the commercial space (like analyzing\nhow much rainfall or snowfall you have).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Water\nand dirt are channeled through the recessed mat into a grate where it can be\nremoved later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\nare some organizations, such as the government of\nMaine<\/a>,\nthat require recessed mats and grates in some circumstances, such as schools.\nThe reason is that recessed mats and grates absorb more water than other types\nof mats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And\nas we often explain in our blog, the more water that gets trapped at the door,\nthe safer the establishment is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If\nyou don\u2019t have the amount of traffic that warrants recessed mats and grates,\nthen the first line of protection would be any high-quality, commercial entrance mat<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If\nyou need a little more water removal than an entrance mat, but not quite enough\nto merit a recessed mat and grate, the next line of defense is a rubber scraper mat<\/a> positioned\noutside. This would mean that customers arriving on foot walk across the\nscraper mat first, then the entrance mat second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s\nimportant to analyze your traffic because if you have too much traffic or too\nmuch water for just an entrance mat, the entrance mat can get wet and dirty too\nfast to be practical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nlast thing you want is an overloaded entrance mat that moves around or is so\nsaturated with dirt and water that it is creating a hazard instead of\nincreasing overall safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This\nis why we recommend that you have several sets of mats: so you can remove,\nclean, and dry a wet and dirty mat as soon as it needs attention, and you have\nanother clean mat to put down, when you take a mat up for cleaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
