If\nyou regularly meet with clients and customers in your office, there are plenty\nof easy things you can do to make the experience more pleasant for the one\nsitting on the other side of the desk. Creating a warm and inviting atmosphere\nis good business. The client is less likely to come back if sitting in your\noffice is uncomfortable and unpleasant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comfortable Chair\nor Chairs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try\nsitting in the guest chair. Is it comfortable? Often the chairs for guests are\nselected by an office admin person for how they look or how much they cost. But\nwhat does it feel like to sit in one? It\u2019s a good idea to give the person a\ncomfortable place to sit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make Your Office\nNeat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without\noverdoing it, clean up your office. Piles of paper or boxes are not pleasant to\nlook at, and they make you look less efficient, not more. Give the impression\nof being organized and not a hoarder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Put Down a Mat at\nthe Entrance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A\nmat at the entrance to your space delineates your office and can also make a\nstatement. With a Logo Mat<\/a>, for example, you\ncould have your company logo, or a pithy quote, or something as simple as\n\u201cWelcome.\u201d Even if your desk is just one in a sea of desks in an open area, you\ncan still make your space look like your own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Candy and Swag<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\nhas been plenty of research<\/a> that giving away\na little candy to customers makes customers spend more. And we know from the\npsychology of influence that giving gifts<\/a>, even small ones,\nmakes others feel indebted to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So\nput a bowl of candy and some swag within easy reach of the client. Pens,\nkeychains, luggage tags, and pads of paper can all be branded with your logo\nand contact information. They\u2019re inexpensive items that clients love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Art<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Put\nsome art on the walls. All your illustrious degrees and photos with important\npeople are good for credibility, but art makes you look human. A couple of\nposters shrink-wrapped or mounted on boards are not expensive and will make the\noffice more inviting and even perhaps open up another channel of conversation.\nPick a couple of Old Masters\u2019 paintings if that\u2019s what you like. If you like to\ncook (or eat) then posters of tomato or pepper or citrus fruit varieties are\ncolorful and interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s\nreally easy to make your office more inviting and it doesn\u2019t have to cost a lot.\nEven if your natural inclination is minimalist and you prefer your office to\nlook a museum, that does not inspire deal-making. Make it so clients and\ncustomers love to come to your office. Your bottom line will thank you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
